Last night, WWE was heavily pushing Twitter, and also noting when they were trending worldwide numerous times during the show. While some have felt that WWE was pushing Twitter in order to look “hip or relevant,” it appears that WWE and Twitter are working together in a cross promotional deal.
It has been revealed recently that Twitter is reaching out to influential personalities, including actors, to get them on board with them as a way to grow followers and self advertise. By doing so, the personalities will get better placement in Twitter searches.
WWE has been integrating Twitter into their programming more aggressively as of late. By doing so, they hope to get their fans more involved with Twitter, which will eventually expand their brand awareness with the goal go get more eyes on the product outside of their current audience.(via)
Considering how many of their feuds have been furthered recently by the inclusion of Twitter, this is not surprising. And except for telling people what to tweet and the godawful graphics that take up half the size of the screen, this isn’t a bad idea, nor is it entirely original. TNA has been plugging Dixie Carter’s twitter for some time now and even ROH is getting in on the game by plugging what people are saying about them during their Sinclair broadcasts.
Also, who doesn’t love when Raw catchphrases such as “anal bleeding” become trending on Twitter?
