Match Of The Day:
RVD & Sabu(c) vs. Jinsei Shinzaki and Hayabusa|
ECW Tag Titles Match
Heat Wave
August 2nd, 1998
Did you guys know Heat Wave was a thing (I didn’t)? Did you know that this match actually happened and I didn’t dream it up during some EWR game?
I’m thoroughly convinced I was legally dead from 1995-2002, because there’s a lot of matches from that time period I seem to have forgotten or, in the case of this one, that I never realized had happened. Let’s just all get into the Wayback Machine on this one and have some fun remembering 1998, shall we?
R2-D2 and Tommy Dreamer just, you know… hanging out.
Ain’t no thang.
Let this photo of Tommy Dreamer with a Freddy Krueger cosplayer from Monster Mania bring you happiness on this Wednesday.
Match of the Day:
Rhino vs Christopher Daniels
ECW Hostile City Showdown
June 26th, 1999
Long before Daniels and Rhino were squaring off in TNA, a young Christopher Daniels took on Rhino in his ECW debut at Hostile City Showdown. Considering the ECW fans are known to be somewhat rabid, you almost get nervous seeing Daniels debut in the company. However, the fans took to him with adoration as Daniels put his life on the line against the man-beast. Surprisingly, there’s a lot of high flying in this match from both wrestlers. You also see some interference from Steve Corino. It rains ROH all over this match.
Following the match, you see a quickie between Rhino and Spike Dudley, which would transcend companies in 2001 as both men interfered WrestleMania 17’s WWE Tag Team Championship match.
The ECW Championship That Never Was
Personally, I was a fan of the big silver belt. The old ECW title was an abomination and the big gold belt is perhaps the best looking belt ever made, so why not take after it when rebooting ECW? I really liked the firey eagle and how it was incorporated into the intro of the show. Maybe it’s a good thing they stuck with the silver before abandoning the ECW brand and title altogether (along with final champion Ezekiel Jackson), but I like this colorful red and gold fan design.
Yes, you are seeing this correctly. On October 30th, 1995, Sabu faced Disco Inferno live on WCW Monday Nitro. In between Sabu’s stints with ECW, he showed up for a brief period in World Championship Wrestling and wrestled during the early days of the Cruiserweight division. This match marked the last time he appeared in the company, and yes… he did end up going over Disco.
