Match of the Day:
Samoa Joe and Jay Lethal vs Austin Aries and Roderick Strong
ROH A Night of Tribute
November 19th, 2005
At the time, Samoa Joe had already held the ROH World Championship for a still undefeated 23 months and had been mentoring the young Jay Lethal, even advising him to change his name to Lethal from the horrible Hydro. With Joe in his corner, Lethal had gone on to win the Pure Championship and have heated matches with Low-Ki and CM Punk.
Joe and Lethal had previously battled their way to the finals of a tournament for the vacant ROH Tag Team Championship but lost to Jimmy Jacobs and BJ Whitmer.
Austin Aries had already beaten Samoa Joe for the World title, ending the streak, and proving that Generation Next were a legitimate threat in ROH. He and Roderick Strong had yet to capture the tag team titles and become two of the most popular champions in ROH history.
