Tazz Throws Popcorn onto Jerry Lawler - WWF SmackDown [9/3/2000]
As a way to hype up the match between Tazz and Jerry Lawler at Unforgiven PPV, the “Human Suplex Machine” showed up on SmackDown and took a seat right behind the commentator’s table during a Saturn/Blackman match. While the match for the Hardcore Championship was going on, Tazz heckled Lawler with insults and at one point, hilariously held a sign that read “TAZZ” with an arrow pointed down towards the former ECW World Heavyweight Champion.
Also, bonus appearance of Jim Dotson, Chairman of Protective Services.
“World of Wrestling’s ECW Smart Pick of 1999: TAZ” - WOW Magazine [February 2000]
I miss the days when World of Wrestling magazine existed and where FTW stood for “FUCK THE WORLD” as opposed to the less-cooler “FOR THE WIN!”.
Fun Fact: Apparently, both Taz and my mother have tattoos of Hot Stuff the Little Devil. Weird.
The Original ECW Invasion - WWF Monday Night RAW [2/24/1997]
Just try to soak this one in: Extreme Championship Wrestling’s Taz making his WWF debut during 1997 complete with ECW logos. Paul Heyman and several of the ECW stars “invaded” McMahon’s RAW whenever the WWF was in NYC, so some fans were treated to their first look at the world of extreme on this day. Vince did this as a way to help promote their first PPV and even ultimately admitted on The Rise and Fall of ECW documentary to paying Heyman for hiring ECW guys.
Weird angle but neat photo, nonetheless.
Christy Hemme and Taz
I’m not too sure why TNA has started to post Instagram photos of their wrestlers on their Facebook page, but it’s a neat little time-waster to go through them. I wish they had more candid shots like this one, instead of putting filters of the “action” shots that can be found in other galleries on their page. Just seems dumb.
ECW Magazine Advert - 1999
In 1999, I was a huge mark for WCW. I used to tape WWF RAW is War/Warzone and watch it later on that night, but for me, WCW Monday Nitro was THE show that I stood by every Monday live. That being said, the fifteen-year-old version of myself always rolled his eyes at the ECW adverts that he saw in his magazines. In fact, I distinctly remembered seeing Extreme Championship Wrestling group as a bunch of desperate nobodies crying out for attention whenever they paid for magazine ads that had the ECW Champ calling out Goldberg or featured something like “TAZ 6:32 - TWICE AS PISSED!”.
Truth is that the fifteen year-old version of myself would have absolutely loved watching ECW as much as the twenty year-old version did, as much as the twenty-five year old version did, and as much as the current twenty-eight year old version STILL does.
Match of the Day
Chris Benoit vs the Tazmaniac
ECW Hardcore TV
October 25th, 1994
For fans of Extreme Championship Wrestling and the Human Suplex Machine, watching this footage might be downright embarrassing. As a matter of fact, it’s eerily similar to seeing video of The Rock when he was all smiles and fucked up hair as Rocky Maivia.
Actually, this version of the Tazmaniac is a bit further removed from the original incarnation as Taz had full make-up whenever he started out. Still, it’s interesting to see the ECW legend wrestling with fur around his singlet and without boots.
Match of the Day:
Kurt Angle vs Tazz
WWF Royal Rumble
January 23rd, 2000
This will always be my favorite “surprise” debut due to the frenzied fans in the arena. They knew who was coming out. They were BEGGING for the Human Suplex Machine to come out and lay waste to the then-undefeated Kurt Angle.
Such an awesome moment.
